Style Report: The Return of the Wide Tie
Wide ties are quickly making a name for themselves as the comeback kid of mens fashion in Europe. While in Italy for Pitti Uomo, wide ties were spotted all over la liga soccer announcements and frequently on the city streets. They've recently started making regular appearances as part of the style of BBC's correspondents.
In the mid-40s and early 50s, short, decorative, wide ties were categorized as a "bold look." After a short run of 4.5-5 inch tie width popularity, the trend fizzled out and most ties slimmed down to about 3 inches in width. Most recently, skinny ties have been all the rage in the US, but it seems like the wide tie is coming back around. The last photo here was found on GQ's Street Style Pinterest board and is from Pitti Uomo in Firenze which took place in June. While the tie pictured on the left appears to be in the 4" width range, there's no doubt that the trend is cycling back again.
