3 Questions with Anthony Bryant, Owner of Little Nomad

What do you do and what do you find most rewarding about it?

I started a retail store that I own with my wife Nora called Little Nomad. It's a modern kids store located in the Arts District of Richmond, Virginia. We sell a mix of clothes, books, toys, and other gift items. I have an extensive background in different facets of retail and after having my first of two daughters (shout out to Devan and Myka), I felt there was a niche market to usher in as to what people thought a kids store should look like. Community engagement and inclusivity is something we believe strongly in. We've shown that through our food drives, Kid Yoga classes, and Drag Queen Story Time. I'm also a Professional DJ. Next March will mark my 25th year of spinning. Hip Hop has definitely raised me. I'm fortunate to do a lot cool private events for corporations and individuals. I'm the Resident DJ for Quirk Hotel and The Brunch Market in Scott's Addition, and have been trusted by couples to be their wedding DJ. The past three years have been my busiest. This is the time I was spending trying to get Little Nomad off the ground and DJ work came in very handy. It's as if the universe was like, "we got you." I had the opportunity this summer to teach my first Intro to Vinyl DJing class. It's pretty amazing to watch someone scratch a record for the first time. It's also been pretty uplifting to donate my time to Richmond City Public School events.

What advice would you give your 20-year-old self?

Trust yourself. I had the passion, the training and what I believed to be great ideas. But trusting I had what it took to bring all of it together was a tough hurdle for me at that age.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Definitely Sunday morning at home. Art Blakey on the turntable, Nora has her book and coffee, the kids are playing, creating a world only they understand, our pups are hanging out soaking up the sun, and I'm just taking it all in. Perfection would be all of that plus Liverpool FC winning the league and Michelle Obama is President.
